Information about Limassol

With a population of around 160,000, Limassol is the largest seaside resort in Cyprus and it is the second largest city after Nicosia. Situated on the southern coast between Paphos and Larnaca, Limassol faces the Mediterranean with a magnificent backdrop of the Troodos mountains spreading for 10 miles along the coast.

Limassol is a modern city with high standards of medical services and well reputed schools, offering visitors and residents a good standard of living and quality accommodation, whether in apartments, townhouses or independent villas. It also offers beautiful beaches, nightlife, shopping, culture and historical monuments making it an excellent choice for holidaymakers.

As a shopping centre, Limassol offers the full gamut from ultra-modern to traditional handmade products. European wares have place alongside local produce and, as in other parts of the island, shoes and clothes can be made to measure in a matter of days. Bustling St Andrews Street, not far from the seafront promenade, makes for a fascinating trip with its quaint buildings and overhanging terraces, under which a cornucopia of small shops vie for attention on this narrow, jostling street. Another notable street is Makarios Avenue, the home of prestigious boutiques and showrooms, as well as small shops of every type.

This is a very historical city where you can visit the Cyprus Medieval Museum in the grounds of Limassol Castle, where Richard the Lionheart allegedly married Queen Berengaria of Navarre in 1191 and crowned her Queen of England – the first Coronation and Royal marriage to take place outside England. Limassol also has an Archaeological Museum, with fascinating statues and pottery, the Municipal Art gallery, as well as a Folk Art Museum. The Public Garden is situated on the coastal road and provides a great variety of vegetation including eucalyptus, pine and cypress trees. This beautiful environment offers a pleasant stroll amidst lush trees, plants and shrubs.

Limassol beaches have very dark sand, while the best beach is called ‘The Ladies Mile’ and is situated close to the new harbour. There is also a new marina in Limassol that has been equipped with every facility to please tourists.
