Larnaca, or Larnaka is the oldest living city of Cyprus and was originally known as Kition or Kittium. Legend has it that the first settlement at the spot was founded by Noah’s grandson Kittim and the biblical name Kittim was, in fact, used quite generally for Cyprus as a whole.
Larnaca has a population of over 70,000 and is the island’s second commercial port and an important tourist resort. Due to its prime location in the Mediterranean, the town has been desired by every civilization that has ruled over this region, including Greeks, Persians, Egyptians, Romans, Byzantines, Venetians, Turks and the British. Today, Larnaca is known for its lovely uncrowded beaches, great food and ancient historical sites.
Larnaca International Airport is located just five kilometres south of the town and is the biggest air hub in Cyprus with many large European carriers handling flights in and out of the island. The airport is soon to be modernized, providing upgraded facilities and will be able to cater for a larger number of visitors each year.
Larnaca is well-known for its picturesque seafront which includes rows of palm trees and a lovely stretch of bars, cafes and seafood restaurants. Much of the activity is centred around this two kilometre promenade during the major festivals. The most important of these for Larnaca is Kataklysmos (the Fesitval of the Flood), celebrated in early summer with a series of cultural events.
People have been living around the site of Larnaca for nearly 6,000 years. There are many amazing archeological sites, such as the ruins of Ancient Kitium. The earliest architectural remains date back to the 13th century B.C the area was rebuilt by Achaean Greeks. The remains of the Cyclopean Walls, made of giant blocks and the complex of the five temples, are particularly interesting. The city’s museums compliment these ancient sites with a plethora of interesting artefacts and information about the early Cypriot culture.
Apart from the rich history, Larnaca is best known for the excellent beaches and the clear seas which surround the town. Relatively undiscovered, Larnaca is an ideal destination for both culture and beachside lounging.
For golf lovers, a new PGA golf course is planned to be constructed just outside Larnaca at Tersefanou.
